Tribute to Francesca Woodman- Experimental photography

Tribute to Francesca Woodman

Experimental photography

In the process of renovating the bedroom, large amounts of really old wall paper were happily pulled from the wall. It reminded me of a piece by Francesca Woodman, one of my favourite female photographers,  called space 2, in which you see only portions of her body, the rest being covered by bits of old wallpaper.

She stands in what looks like a deserted building with cracked and crumbling walls. It's absolutely breath taking and definitely one of my favourite pieces of art photography.  I haven't added the image of Francesca Woodman's work here for copyright purposes, so click on the link above to have a look!

I took the pulled off wallpaper to the studio, took some photos and edited them to give the effect of the body emerging or disappearing into the wall paper. Since University I have been playing around with this idea of revealing and concealing. In the past and even recently with my Pink paintings I have used lace stencilling and patterning over the body to create a kind of translucency of the body. So I am excited to experiment more with photography in this theme too:)
